Village Center at Brookberry Farm

WINSTON-SALEM, NC

The developers of an 800-acre planned community built on a former working farm estate of a tobacco baron outside of Winston-Salem, retained Acanthus Architecture to design and oversee the construction of the development’s public buildings.

Acanthus’s goal was to draw from the refined farm vernacular of the original estate to craft inviting and gracious structures and spaces for residents of the community to gather. The placement and interaction of the buildings are the product of a strong collaboration with the landscape architects and were essential to the end result, which allows for the natural beauty and history of the property to be preserved and celebrated.

Village Basic typologies and simple forms create the Brookberry Village Center, which includes a clubhouse, fitness center, colonnade, and pavilion assembled around an existing dairy barn. The barn itself was converted into an assembly space for receptions, banquets, and other gatherings. This adaptive-use renovation included a new service wing and the removal of the second floor hay loft in order to open the main space to the full height of the original arched rafters.
