Roaring Gap House

ROARING GAP, NC

This house is sited on the crest of the Blue Ridge with a dramatic vista over receding folds of the mountains as they fade into Virginia. While primary rooms and bedrooms all share this view, activity during most of the year gravitates to the east porch and to the warmth of its fireplace on cool evenings.

The triple gable composition and intimate character of this house were inspired by the clients’ love of English cottage architecture. At the same time, the materials and detailing are rooted in American rustic architecture: shake walls and roofs, native field stone, heavy timber posts and beams, and roof overhangs articulated with rafter tails and outlookers.

In order to achieve a graceful and charming synthesis of these traditions, Acanthus carefully considered the scale and balance of all elements and approached these rough materials and details with deliberate delicacy and refinement.
